Slow Slack

Slack is an amazing chat tool for teams, we use it daily at Automattic. Unfortunately it is unusable on slow connections, something I run into sometimes when traveling; recently in Nicaragua, rural Ohio, and Silver City, New Mexico. I wish it worked better in those situations.

To their credit, the loading messages are humorous and keep me from punching the wall because I’m smiling at the clever copywriting and positive attitude.

[Update: my coworker Obenland pointed out this one is a custom message we added. Ha! But the default ones from Slack are also in the same vein.]

They’re actually all custom messages, hand crafted by Automatticians.

I did not know that. You sure all? I remember a few showed up when I first used Slack, though, before our customizations (or most teams were on it).

Yes, all. We even disabled built-in messages. 🙂

The default Slack ones are good, too—and set the tone. I think Automattic’s attitude fits that well.

As a reference, he’s the Ohio connection I was trying to use: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/995781622 — pretty freaking slow.
